Background to the Exam

The new requirements for applications made for Settlement / ILR / Naturalisation applications, received by the Home Office on or after 28th October 2013, state that applicants are required to:

  • Pass the Life in the UK Test AND
  • have a B1 speaking & listening qualification at B1 CEFR or higher, or an equivalent level qualification which has been regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).

Test type: ESOL Entry Level 3 / B1 CEFR English Course in Speaking and Listening  for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Nationality or British Passport.

Exam Duration: 15-17 minutes, One to one and group discussion with another candidate.

Awarding Bodies: Learning Resources Network (LRN) & English Management Direct (Both regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual))

Certificate: Received within 10 working days. candidates who wishto deliver the certificate, there will be £10 postage and handling charge, payable on exam day in cash.

Fee: £150, if no tuition is required.
£200 if basic tuition required.

£250 + if candidate is very week and need extensive teaching

How to prepare for the ESOL B1 Test?

We are committed to providing the highest quality service to all learners within the limits of our resources. Once you have registered with us we will provide you with study material that will guide you on the format of the test., you will be initially assessed with qualified teacher to find out  your knowledge and  needs. As part of all our  Learning Packages we provide learner with all of the necessary study material, study guides and resources. We wish  all our learners to pass their test at the first attempt.

We ensure that all learner  have adequate knowledge about the test format andso they do not get any surprises during the test on the day. We teach   until  you can confidently communicate.  We therefore arrange training sessions which includes:

  • One to  one Teaching
  • Joint Classroom sessions
  • Video ? audio presentation
  • Sample papers / videos

 How long is the course?
This depend upon your  English level, if you have good Speaking and Listening level, you may not need to attend any class. You can come on the day of exam and undertake your test with external examiner.
To determine your current entry level you will need to visit our centre and undertake an initial assessment. If we find during initial assessment we may ask you attend a or a number to get knowledge and confidence  to perform well during the test. Before the test we make sure that you are ready for the exam. If you are not sure what your level of English is, an assessment can be carried out by a teacher at Mantec College free of charge.

Candidates must present one form of ID. Only Original forms of ID will be accepted (copies will NOT be accepted).  Letters  from Lawyer, Govt authorties  will also  NOT be accepted.
Following are accepted forms of ID are:
•             current valid passport
•             current valid EU national identity card*
•             current valid Biometric Residence Permit (with photo)
•             current valid full photo card Driving Licence (INCLUDING paper counterpart)
•             current valid Residence Permit (with photo)


Please note if you failed to present any accepted form of ID, you will NOT be able to take your test and there will be NO refund.
